Research interests

Martin has worked in both industry and academia in the area of manufacturing processes and automation. A key aspect of the industrial experience has been in the area of robotics and the implementation of automation to enhance the efficiency of industrial tasks.

Recent research work has focused on the analysis and development of advanced cutting tools for the high speed machining of aluminium and titanium alloys. This work is aimed at improving the manufacturing capability of both automotive and aerospace industries in Europe, and has been funded by a substantial EU grant. The project is in collaboration with tool manufacturers from the UK and Germany and with Airbus UK and Centro Ricerche Fiat from Italy.

Research collaborations

Other research in collaboration with industry, has investigated the intelligent control of a key electronics manufacturing process. This involved a study of the fundamental principles of the process along with the application of novel control techniques to learn and control this complex system. Martin has also worked with a range of SMEs to investigate and improve their manufacturing capability.
