Geometric Modelling and Pattern Recognition Research Group (GMPR)
The Geometric Modelling and Pattern Recognition (GMPR) Research Group is part of the Materials and Engineering Research Institute, and pursues original and exciting research in geometric modelling and pattern recognition with a major focus on
- fast 3D model acquisition
- parameterisation of surfaces
- image registration
- multi-angle laser scattering modelling for micro-organism characterisation
We are supported by national and regional funding agencies and collaborate with a number of industrial partners.
Funded by the Regional Development Agency, Yorkshire Forward, and by Sheffield Hallam University, we have developed and patented unique technologies for 3D surface scanning with a single, instantaneous shot. The system can use either structured white light or near infra-red and a version now exists for fast 3D facial acquisition and recognition. Our technologies support a range of applications such as multimedia graphics and animation, geometrical descriptions of 3D modelling software, verification of shape geometry in industrial processes, reverse engineering, medical prosthetics and rehabilitation, archaeology and archiving plus much more.
Funded by the prestigious UK Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) Life Sciences Interface, GMPR are investigating modelling and pattern recognition techniques for particle characterisation with applications to microbiology. We have patented unique sensing and characterisation procedures based on light scattering patterns of angular dependency. Our technology supports a number of applications including monitoring water quality, brewery and beverage industries, clinical analysis, endospore characterisation and many others.
