Professor Smith is the Faculty of ACES Head of Business Development He has led the Sheffield Hallam University - Outokumpu Welding and Joining Research group since 1996. Professor Smith is regularly featured in the media both locally, nationally and internationally in the context of his work in the field of forensic failure investigations and counterfeit products
He is a Chartered Engineer, a Chartered Scientist and a Fellow of the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining. He is regularly called upon to act as an Expert Witness specialising in welding and joining and Collision Investigation. He is Professor of Forensic Engineering and an enthusiastic advocate of industry-academia interaction in terms of research, development and consultancy.
Alan Smith has been involved and committed to developing and delivering Knowledge Transfer Partnerships (KTP) with engineering and materials companies across the UK.
