Materials Analysis

Our activities are focused primarily on the characterisation/behaviour of structural and functional materials, so as to enable the predication of component/structure lifetimes.

In order to understand the fundamentals of complex material behaviour, our research institute includes technologists and scientists from a range of disciplines including electrochemistry, mechanical engineering, tribology and metallurgy.

Research topics covered within the Centre include

  • corrosion and durability
  • stress, fatigue and fracture
  • ceramics and polymers
  • joining and surface treatment processes, including welding and brazing and shot/laser/ultrasonic peening
