SIRC's economic impact research demonstrates the value of the 2010 Open Golf Championship to Scotland

Open Championship organiser The R&A and EventScotland has announced that the 150th Anniversary Open Championship, staged in St Andrews last year, delivered a combined £100 million benefit to Scotland.

The headline number includes a Scotland-wide economic impact of £47.4 million and a destination marketing benefit of £52.6 million, calculated from global television coverage presenting Scotland as the 'The Home of Golf'.

The 2010 study was based on 3,000 interviews, conducted by the SIRC team, with players, spectators, sponsors, event staff, organisers and the media, with overseas visitors to The Open from 43 countries identified by the research.

Inside The Games report on SIRC's research into last year's Virgin London Marathon

The research confirmed that the London Marathon generated £110.1 million ($179.8 million) of economic activity in the UK last year, while spending in the capital by marathon runners, spectators, organisers and visitors was worth £31.7 million ($51.7 million).

Researchers from SIRC interviewed thousands of people and businesses before, during and after the event last year and conducted an online survey of runners and volunteers. 'This research confirms that apart from being a wonderful sporting spectacle and celebration of the human spirit, the event is also a commercially successful business venture.'

The figure represents a 60 per cent increase in the Marathon's economic importance for the UK over 10 years since it was last measured in 2000.

SIRC awarded contract by Arts Council England and West Midlands Cultural Observatory

SIRC has been appointed by Arts Council England (ACE) and the West Midlands Cultural Observatory to assure the quality of its economic impact toolkit for events supported by the West Midlands Culture Programme for London 2012. This contract is a strong endorsement of eventIMPACTS.com, the event impact framework that SIRC developed for UK Sport and its partners in 2009.

SIRC will help ACE by checking that the proposed toolkit is compliant with the methodology proposed in eventIMPACTS.com which is rapidly becoming the benchmark for credible economic impact studies that can be defended with an audit trail of evidence.

For further details on economic impact studies or eventIMPACTS.com, please contact Professor Simon Shibli.

New community sport and physical activity projects for Hull City Council

The Sport Industry Research Centre has recently helped Hull City Council secure funding for two major community sport and physical activity projects. View testimonial

Hearty Lives Hull is an exciting new programme of community-based activities being developed by NHS Hull and Hull City Council, in partnership with the British Heart Foundation (BHF). Launched in November, the BHF are providing £1.5m funding over three years to support new activities including sport, physical activity, and healthy eating, as well as encouraging people to use existing services such as NHS Health Checks, weight management and stop smoking services.

In January 2011 Hull was also awarded a further £300k from Sport England's Active Women Programme. The project focuses on delivering opportunities for women in disadvantaged areas in North Hull including Bransholme, Orchard Park and Greenwood.

In 2009 SIRC have worked with Hull on the development of 'Pride Passion and Participation', the city's sport and physical activity strategy, and in 2010 developed parts of the funding submissions for Hearty Lives and Active Women. This involved detailed analysis of Sport England's Active People and Market Segmentation Data. SIRC were able to model demand for a variety of activities at ward level. This enabled a strong case to be made for funding and the development of detailed marketing and communication plans to support the project.

Sport England update

Since being awarded the contract to evaluate the 'Sport Unlimited' programme, SIRC have developed new techniques for use in the evaluation process.

An 'innovation lab' has been created, from which Sport Unlimited partners can choose the research methods and tools (PDF 423KB) which will suit their local needs and infrastructure. The lab features tools which are more likely to engage young people, such as handheld voting pads, 'Big Brother' style video diaries and photo caption sheets, all of which form part of the menu of data collection options.

Embracing new technology, SIRC has also established an online network to deliver feedback and highlights to project partners via videos, images and documents.
