Elite sport
Our elite sport research includes work on performance management and the analysis of elite sport development systems. We have worked extensively on the Olympic Games and the Commonwealth Games for UK Sport and the home nation sports councils.
We have developed new products for quantifying performance measurement in single sport and multi-sport events, notably around the notion of 'market share' and improvement monitoring. SIRC has developed a technique to benchmark the performance of nations in consecutive editions of major sports events. A graph displaying this can be found here.
On behalf of UK Sport, SIRC is at the heart of the European consortium SPLISS (Sport Policy factors Leading to International Sporting Success). The SPLISS research teams are concerned with identifying global best practice from a programme of transnational comparisons of elite sports development systems.
Simon Shibli was the only academic appointed to the National Audit Office's expert panel when it conducted a review of UK Sport's support of elite athletes. In 2005 Simon was a keynote speaker at the National Olympic Academy where he presented his findings on the relationship between inputs, processes and outputs in elite sports development systems.
