Research interests/current work

I have a keen interest in theorising the processes of social exclusion / social inclusion. This has been demonstrated in my PhD work in sociological studies at the University of Sheffield, where I examined 'race' in notions of USA national identity. This interest has moved on to disability studies and education studies. Being based within Sheffield Hallam University's portfolio of quality enhancement, I am currently engaged in institutional research with a focus on student engagement, widening participation and inclusive practice in learning, teaching and assessment. I am managing editor for the institution's own peer-reviewed Student Engagement and Experience Journal. I am also a member of the European Access Network and the Disability Research Forum.

Funded research includes the Equality Challenge Unit grant (as Co-I) 'Using data to improve the disabled student experience' (completed 2011), the Higher Education Academy grant (as PI): 'Enabling transition into higher education for students with Asperger Syndrome' (completed 2007) and the Aimhigher South Yorkshire grant (as PI): 'Transition of Disabled Learners from Further Education to Higher Education' (completed 2005).
