Support for research

The Enterprise Centre

The Enterprise Centre is a department of Sheffield Hallam University, dedicated to

  • supporting new and existing research
  • enabling the commercialisation of intellectual property, and
  • developing a spirit of enterprise in students and staff

Our role is to strengthen the existing research base and encourage collaborative relationships with business, working towards the generation of beneficial outcomes for the University.

For further information, please visit the University's services for business section or call 0114 225 5000.

Staff development

As with all staff, researchers at Sheffield Hallam are encouraged to take part in a range of development opportunities. The Enterprise Centre staff development programme was especially designed to offer tailored in-house courses to support research and business development activity.

The University offers training for the development of transferable skills, such project management and presentation skills. Specialist careers advice is available and recommended for researchers on fixed-term contracts, and staff at all levels are encouraged to take part in these activities.

The University is committed to the 2008 Concordat to Support the Career Development of Researchers, which sets out principles for supporting and managing research careers and outlines the responsibilities and expectations of researchers, managers, employers and funders. The University formed a Working Group to review the University's current practice and develop an action plan for further development. The action plan will be published here shortly.

How research can help your business

Business, public and voluntary sector organisations can all get involved in research at Sheffield Hallam. This could provide an objective independent view on an established problem, a source of new ideas or simply access to specialist expertise and equipment.

Researchers at Sheffield Hallam are involved in a range of the following activities

  • curiosity driven/fundamental research where ideas are generated by the researchers curiosity and are aimed at advancing knowledge
  • applied research which is focused on addressing a real world problem, meeting social and/or industrial needs
  • consultancy, which gives access to expert advice and specialist services including the use of equipment

Curiosity driven research often results in a range of novel applications and solutions previously unthought of, although the timescale is longer than that for applied research.

For further information, please contact the Enterprise Centre on 0114 225 5000, who will help source the appropriate research centre.
