About us
In our research activities we aim to promote places that are pleasant to live and work in and which are economically, socially and environmentally sustainable.
To this end, our research is concerned with the processes that lead to the development of places, with relevant government policies, the regulation and promotion of development, and the measurement of environmental effects.
Our inter-disciplinary staff group has research and consultancy expertise in
- analysis of contemporary urban and regional issues
- environmental studies
- strategic approaches to policy development
- advice on policy formulation
- evidence based evaluations
Previous clients include government departments in Britain and France, European agencies, local authorities, housing associations, National Park Authorities, environmental groups, trade unions and charitable foundations.
We participate in a wide range of professional and academic conferences at a national and international level. We have links with a variety of research and professional networks, including
- Association of European Schools of Planning (AESOP)
- Academy for Sustainable Communities (ASC)
- British Urban Regeneration Association (BURA)
- Royal Geographical Society (with the Institute of British Geographers) (RGS-IBG)
In addition, we have a direct involvement in the Countryside Recreation Network whose administration is hosted at Sheffield Hallam University.
In relation to the urban environment, we are currently developing a new form of partnership between academics and practitioners within the framework of the UniverCities initiative of the British Academy of Urbanism. As part of this initiative, the Sheffield Urban Think Tank (PDF 1.70MB) aims to develop an exemplary model in using learning, research, informed ideas and practical experience to direct the future planning and thinking about cities and regions.
