Welcome to Urban and Regional Studies

Urban and Regional Studies (URS) is a teaching and research group which has a national reputation in the areas of housing, regeneration, planning, human geography and environment.

We have a strong focus on the relationships between society and the built and natural environments, and work collaboratively with a wide range of organisations to tailor our teaching and research to the needs of our professional sectors.

Our areas of research include

  • economic and social regeneration
  • urban planning and design
  • housing policy and practice
  • gender equality
  • anti-social behaviour
  • government and governmentality
  • countryside management
  • environmental sustainability
  • tourism, leisure and sports related studies
  • transport

The results of the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) have confirmed that Sheffield Hallam is one of the best universities in the UK for research in social and economic regeneration, housing and labour market analysis. Members of URS contributed to the submission in the Town Planning Unit of Assessment (UoA), together with our associated research centre, the Centre for Regional Economic and Social Research, and this was rated as world-leading in terms of originality, significance and rigour.

We also work closely with other research centres
