A review of progress and achievements in research and related activities
The past year, 2009, has again been a year of achievement and recognition for specific members of staff.
The work of Richard White and Rob Furbey has already been featured in the below news items. In addition, many staff has been active in working with other universities and in preparing and securing the publication of articles in recognised academic journals.
The volume of such work has increased significantly over the past two years, with the range of work too long to be listed. However, our most notable achievements are as follows.
Stephen Jay has been working with partners at the University of Oldenburg in Germany on the experience of marine spatial planning. The project has been funded jointly by the British Council and a German research agency. Stephen has also been active in securing the publication of a series of articles and other work on marine spatial planning, as well as giving guest lectures at various universities including the University of Amsterdam.
Together with colleagues at Sheffield Hallam University, Barry Goodchild has completed a project led by the École Nationale des Ponts et Chaussées in Paris, examining the skills and work role involved in neighbourhood regeneration in France and England. The client was the urban ministry of the French government. Barry has also secured the publication of a scientific paper on the same subject and has given a guest lecture at the planning school (Institut d'Urbanisme) at Grenoble in France.
Judy Nixon has continued her research into anti-social behaviour, women and the family. She has secured the publication of a series of articles in scientific journals and is also involved in other, ongoing research projects for a number of different clients. Alongside Rionach Casey, and other colleagues from Sheffield Hallam and elsewhere, Judy has also secured a Scottish government publication, which reports on intensive family intervention projects. The report is available to download.
Finally, Rionach Casey has completed, with other colleagues, a study into the barriers to the delivery of affordable housing in rural Wales, which has been published by the Welsh Assembly. Rionach has also been involved on a study to assess the health needs of people of Irish origins in Calderdale.

New book on 'Faith in the Public Realm'
Dr Rob Furbey has co-edited a new book, entitled, 'Faith in the Public Realm: Controversies, Policies and Practices'.
The book is a contribution to debates regarding the public presence of religion in a range of fields, including education, housing, urban regeneration and community cohesion. The chapters are written by authors with varying standpoints and fields of expertise.
The book is designed to be of interest to students and academics in social policy and the social sciences, and also to policy-makers and practitioners in the public and voluntary sectors and to members of faith communities.
