Employ a placement student

Frequently asked questions

Why should I employ a placement student?

Some of the benefits employers enjoy by providing work placements for our high caliber students include

  • an injection of fresh ideas and up-to-date professional skills from ambitious individuals
  • an opportunity to see their potential as future employees once they graduate
  • placement students are part of your workforce - this means you have extra staff without a commitment for permanent employment
  • providing a resource for specialist projects - placement students can carry out specialist projects the company may not have time to do
  • reduced recruitment costs

What does the placement support team do?

The placement support team is available all year round to offer support and guidance for students and employers during the recruitment process and throughout the placement year.

As placement vacancies are received, they are promoted to relevant student groups in line with the placement provider's brief. We advertise vacancies to students on the student intranet. We will send you CVs from student applicants or ask them to complete your application process dependent on your recruitment brief.

When you have short-listed the applicants, we can contact the students to arrange interviews on your behalf. We can also arrange for you to hold interviews on campus for your convenience.

What sort of jobs can students do?

Our students can contribute a vast range of skills and knowledge to suit many different positions and working environments.

Our placement seeking students come from a variety of academic disciplines including business, human resource management, finance, marketing, events, hospitality, food and tourism and can be recruited to a range of placement roles such as marketing assistant, events manager, and financial and management assistant.

Will students require a lot of supervision?

The student's line manager will be expected to monitor their progress during a placement and write a short report on their development to assess the student's overall performance and contribution to your company.

Students are also allocated a placement support tutor who will visit the student during their period of employment to ensure that the placement is running successfully, and to provide extra support where required. For some internationally placed students, this support is sometimes provided by phone and/or e-mail rather than a visit.

How long does a placement last?

Placements are generally 48 weeks and start between May and September.

What do you expect from my organisation?

The placement year offers many benefits to our students as they are able to apply their classroom based learning in a business environment. The placement year aims to

  • offer students a range of new experiences and challenges which will assist in the development of practical and personal skills
  • enable students to appreciate the importance of working relationships and their contribution to an organisation's activities
  • enhance students' knowledge of business practice and to reinforce or question the content of their academic study
  • develop a wider understanding of both the national and international business environment
  • enhance the students' awareness that skills and knowledge gained in a business environment are as relevant and valuable as those gained in an academic setting

What will it cost?

The majority of students will be paid depending upon location, degree of responsibility and hours worked.

During the placement year the student is an employee of the organisation concerned; they are expected to work the same hours as other staff and are paid a salary. The actual amount is a matter for negotiation between the student and employer.

In general, placement students offer good value for money but we expect them to be paid a wage that is appropriate for their contribution to your organisation.
