Event safety update

We hope you can give a few moments of your time to give your input into a short course in event safety that we are designing for event professionals like yourselves.

You are probably aware that in October last year the Government announced the findings of a review into health and safety by Lord Young. The aim of the review was to 'put some common sense back into health and safety', and you can find a copy of the Young Report on the Prime Minister's website.

One of the recommendations in the report was that 'officials who ban events on health and safety grounds should put their reasons in writing' and that 'citizens…have a route for redress where they want to challenge local officials' decisions'. Another of the recommendations also states that 'insurance companies should cease the current practice that requires businesses operating in low hazard environments to employ health and safety consultants to carry out full health and safety risk assessments'.

It is clear that the Government are attempting to 'cut red tape' in the industry, but what is also clear is that they have found current safety legislation to be fit for purpose. It will be interesting to see how (or whether) Lord Young's review will affect the events sector, but whatever the long-term outcome of his review, it has served to highlight the fact that all organisations should be employing competent staff and continue to take 'reasonably practicable' steps to protect people's safety.

The event management subject team here at Sheffield Hallam are currently working with the Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH) to develop a module in Event Safety Management. The module will be available as a stand alone short course for anyone involved in event management.

As a member of the events community we would really value your thoughts on what we should include in this course. Below is a link to a very short questionnaire - it's only nine questions long so will take you just a few minutes to complete.

With your input we will be able to design a course that is relevant to the needs of this community, as well as the needs of our event students in preparing them for a career in industry. Please can you take a few minutes to give us your thoughts?
