Profile
Bill is well known for his research in the areas of tourism policy and planning, tourism and governance, and tourism and sustainable development. He is professor of international tourism studies in the Centre for Tourism, Hospitality and Events Research. In 1993 he co-founded and he continues to co-edit (with Bernard Lane) the Journal of Sustainable Tourism, which has eight issues each year. The journal has an Impact Factor of 1.539 in the Thomson Reuters' Social Sciences Citation (SSCI) Index for 2010, and it is ranked 6th out of the top 39 international journals in the SSCI Hospitality, Leisure, Sport and Tourism subject areas. He is associate editor of the Journal of Ecotourism, resource editor for Annals of Tourism Research, and he is on the editorial boards of 13 other research journals.
He has edited or co-authored several books, including books on rural tourism and sustainable development, tourism partnerships, sustainable tourism in Europe, and coastal mass tourism. He has published widely in the tourism research journals and he has written numerous book chapters. In a global survey of all academics contributing papers to the three highest-rated tourism research journals over the past decade his total of papers was ranked 15th. In a survey of the most frequently cited scholars internationally in tourism his number of citations in Google Scholar was ranked 31st for the period 1998-2007. In 2007 he won the 'article of the year' award by the international journal Tourism Recreation Research.
His publications have examined aspects of tourism development or policy in many countries, including Turkey, Malta, Southern Europe, Germany, Denmark, Barbados, Brazil, Thailand and China. He has been the supervisor for 17 PhDs and two MPhils that were successfully completed, and he has examined 33 PhDs and three MPhils, including many at overseas universities. Prior to joining the University he worked for the English Tourist Board.
