Dorothea is particularly interested in the political economy of tourism and the role of tourism as an agent for poverty reduction in less economically developed countries.
She completed her PhD at the University of North London in 2001, which focused on power, networks and resident responses to tourism development. Prior to that, she worked as marketing executive for the Malta National Tourist Office in London, and as researcher/lecturer for the tourism department at the Technical University of Dresden in Germany. After finishing her PhD she worked on pro-poor tourism issues for the Overseas Development Institute, where she focused on projects in sub-Saharan Africa looking at pro-poor tourism methodology and in particularly the implementation of linkages between mainstream tourism businesses and 'poor' neighbouring communities.
She joined Sheffield Hallam University in 2004, where she has combined her teaching with research projects. She is director of the Tourism and Poverty Reduction Research Unit and has recently carried out research projects related to tourism as a tool for poverty reduction in the Dominican Republic, Sri Lanka, Vanuatu, Thailand, Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda and South Africa. Dorothea worked on projects funded by a variety of organisations including the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), European Commission European Development Fund/Africa Caribbean Pacific, UK Department for International Development (DfID), UK Department for Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS), the Travel Foundation, and various local governments, community based organisations and (international) non governmental organisations. She is currently engaged in research and education projects in Southern and Eastern Africa.
