The Wine Studies Unit

The Wine Studies Unit was set up in the summer of 2008 with the aim of establishing a research group to carry out research into all aspects of wine and associated beverages.

The current research themes are

  • the UK wine industry
  • wine service in restaurants (from family-run restaurants to Michelin star restaurants)
  • health, ethical and other related issues
  • wine and other drinks marketing

The services offered to businesses through the group include

  • wine knowledge and training
  • consultancy services
  • a network of wine researchers
  • promotion of Wine and Spirit Education Trust courses
  • academic development in the field of wine and associated beverages
  • international links with institutions interested in wine studies
  • placements/links with wine companies

Examples of recent research projects include

  • a bid for the UK Vineyards Association - involving a scoping study on the Rural Development Programme for England. This project is supported by the viticulture sector in England and the UK government.
  • Wine and Spirit Education Trust, intermediate and advanced wine courses - courses will be run at the university and delivered by professional wine tutors, starting with the intermediate in October 2010. There will be an opportunity to gain knowledge of wines and other beverages, as well as tutored tastings and the opportunity to gain a recognised qualification
  • Ryedale Vineyards in Yorkshire - a member of the Wine Studies Unit is currently involved with work with this excellent vineyard and this has facilitated a good knowledge-base of English wines
  • longitudinal research into consumer perceptions of wine - a long-term (15 years plus) research project that is looking at perceptions of wine over a period of time
  • Oinoudidasko wine education - this is a wine education company that provides wine consultancy services including an excellent level and range of wine courses to suit a range of abilities. Visit www.oinoudidasko.co.uk
