Annual conference 2011

For better or for worse - making FM relationships work

This year, our facilities management conference tackled the wide ranging and challenging issue of developing organisational relationships.

Working across agencies and with reduced budgets is a theme common to many, particularly in the public sector and for those delivering out-sourced activities. During the course of the day our guests and staff presented thought-provoking speeches and practical, interactive sessions, which provided insights into developing and maintaining key relationships and partnerships across the FM agenda.

Keynote speakers outlined the strategic landscape, backed up by guests from the profession who drew on real-life case studies to demonstrate practical examples of how they are tackling particular relationship-based issues.

Annual conference 2010

Embracing change in times of uncertainty

On 9 September we held our annual conference, emphasising why FM must embrace change in times of uncertainty. The fluctuating economic climate either amplifies or shrinks resistance to change. But one thing is clear - without adapting to new situations, the chance of failure soars. Facilities management is no exception.

On this basis, our 2010 conference was hugely important to the FM profession, offering ideas and helping delegates to spot the opportunities to successfully embrace change and prove the true value of the FM profession.

The conference brought together a mix of speakers, practitioners and academics to share their vision and ideas, not only to get through these turbulent times, but also to capitalise on this opportunity to deliver better services, better facilities and gain better respect as a profession.

Good leadership, change management, innovation and partnership will always prevail in the longer term, so it's vital that organisations don't panic and make rash decisions or cutbacks.

Annual conference 2009

Delegates at the 2009 conferenceFM and Sustainability: Opportunities, Challenges and Strategies
Thursday 10 September 2009

The annual Centre for Facilities Management Development Networks Conference, now in its third year, is rapidly becoming an established event for facilities management. 2008 was an overwhelming success, attracting about 120 facilities management professionals, over half of whom were estates and facilities directors/assistant directors in charge of multi-million pound budgets.

2009's event delivered more lively debate and the latest thinking, bringing together two very pertinent areas. Titled 'FM and Sustainability: Challenges - Opportunities - Strategies', the event emphasised the fundamental role that sustainability is increasingly playing in FM thinking. Sustainable practices, such as carbon trading, renewable energy technologies and integrated planning are no longer 'nice to have' options.

Regional facilities management professionals came together in September to hear about the wealth of opportunities surrounding an integration of FM and sustainability. The event inspired delegates to look at new ways of 'doing business'. Although issues such as carbon emissions and energy efficiency can seem daunting challenges, the opportunities they produce for FM professionals is astounding. And it was this forward-looking and enthusiastic view that was presented at the event.

Delegates heard from experts, including Dr Jeremy Leggett of Solarcentury, Bernard Williams, visiting professor at Sheffield Business School and Professor Brian Edwards from the Royal Danish Academy of Architecture, each of whom shared their ideas and experiences, providing delegates with extremely valuable advice to take back to their own organisations.

Our sponsors for 2009 were Coretex, Kier, the NPS Group and the Perpetuity Group.

It is vital that facilities managers understand and embrace these measures in order to meet cost targets, stakeholder demands and legislation, and to prepare for the future. This event helped delegates to understand what sustainable practices entail in the context of facilities management and the opportunities open for their organisation. We also discussed implementation strategies, and practicalities including financing and contracting.
