Knowledge Transfer Partnerships
What is a Knowledge Transfer Partnership?
Knowledge Transfer Partnerships (KTPs) are agreements between your organisation and the University. Together we recruit a graduate to run a project in your organisation, fully supported by a specialist University academic. You benefit from our expertise and enthusiasm, and the graduate gains valuable experience. All the partnerships are partly funded by the government.
The classic KTP lasts between one and three years - to find out more visit the University's Business channel.
Short KTP
What can a short KTP offer me?
A shorter KTP has recently been launched which aims to address more short-term, tactical business issues. They also act as a stepping-stone for those organisations that have not worked with a University or college before to realise the benefits that can be achieved through knowledge transfer and collaborative partnerships.
Projects may be stand-alone or can lead to, run in parallel with, or follow-on from a classic KTP. Partnerships may have more than one shorter KTP running in parallel or sequentially.
The benefits
KTPs are part-funded by the Government. Therefore, they are cost effective methods of gaining access to well-qualified people and experts within the UK's Universities and further education colleges who can also help to take your organisation forward.
Case study
Fosters Bakery
Fosters is one of South Yorkshire's best known bakeries and has already enjoyed considerable success, but a decision to improve their management and employee capability brought Sheffield Hallam University on board for further development.
Professor Liz Doherty and Ann Norton, both specialists in human resources based in CBM, were invited to help Fosters to prepare a successful KTP bid.
The project helped Fosters to appoint an associate, Sarah Carmody, to help develop and manage their human resources strategy over two years. Supervised by Liz and Ann, Sarah worked closely with Operations Director Michael Taylor to bring about the changes they needed.
'Having Sarah working with us was an enormous benefit. It freed up my time so I could concentrate on other priorities and the input from Ann and Liz was extremely helpful.'
Michael Taylor, Operations Director, Fosters Bakery
'Everyone benefited from the KTP approach. I learnt a lot by working with the company, and the company got top level advice from the experts at Sheffield Hallam University as well as my day-to-day input.'
Sarah Carmody, KTP Associate, Fosters Bakery
