Starting at university
Flying start programme
The first year of university can sometimes be a difficult transition year for our students. There are new subjects to study, different approaches to study methods, a new place to live, a new city to navigate, new friends and teachers to get used to.
In recognition of this, Sheffield Business School has developed the role of academic coaches, where tutors support students on an extended induction programme called 'Flying Start'.
The flying start programme is a combination of university induction, academic skills enhancement, settling in and social transition support and a Personal Development Programme aimed at helping make the move into higher education as smooth as possible for all of our undergraduate students.
The programme consists of both activity based seminars and one to one meetings which explore particular themes and issues, and also give time for the students to discuss any general academic issues.
Peer Networking Scheme
The Peer Networking Scheme aims to help you feel at home quickly by providing opportunities for you to make contact with senior students who can provide information and assistance through peer group meetings.
The scheme runs on an opt-in basis and is available to all first year (Level 4) students. The peer networking groups that you will join will be made up of two final year (Level 6) students and four first year students enabling the group to share experiences and information about their first year at university, the social scene in Sheffield and student support networks.
