Library services for external users
As part of Sheffield Hallam University's commitment to the local learning community, the learning and IT services department provides a range of facilities for users who are not members of the University. These fall into four categories
Reference use
We welcome independent learners. Members of the public can use some library resources for reference. Sheffield Hallam University is a member of the South Yorkshire Access to Libraries for Learning (SYALL) scheme to open up access to library facilities for those involved in learning and research that are not registered with an educational establishment.
External borrowers
Former students and retired staff of Sheffield Hallam University who live locally can become external borrowers. You will need to bring proof of identity and eligibility for this category - for former students this is the original certificate and proof of local address (utility bill), for retired staff proof of local address.
Reciprocal borrowers
We have reciprocal arrangements with a number of other universities through the SCONUL Access scheme.
If your university is a member of this scheme you will need to apply for a SCONUL Access card from your home university library and bring this along with your university library card and proof of your local address (utility bill).
Subscription borrowers
If you do not qualify for a borrower card under the external or reciprocal borrower categories, you may wish to become a subscription borrower. This costs £30 including VAT, and is valid for one year. Enrolment under this category is at the discretion of the head of learning and academic services.
How to register
To register for a borrower card please ask a member of learning and IT services staff at a learning centre service point. Always bring some form of identification with you when visiting a learning centre.
