The Image Collection

The Image Collection consists of
- a large well established collection of 35mm slides. Whilst this was primarily developed to support the teaching learning and research needs of staff and students in fine art, there are images of interest to other subject areas, for example architecture, urban planning, tourism.
- an evolving digital collection, SHIMMER. The aim of SHIMMER is to support the wider teaching, learning and research needs of the University and the Image Collection staff are working closely with teaching staff to develop this collection.
The Image Collection staff are actively involved in taking photographs for the Collection from a wide range of subjects. The University has a licence with the Design and Artists Copyright Society (DACS) which allows us to make slides of images from books for the educational purposes of Sheffield Hallam University. In addition we have been fortunate in gaining access to artists' and designers' original works to photograph for the Collection and also received donations of images from artists. Image Collection staff are committed to broadening the scope of the Collection and the facilities of SHIMMER enable teaching staff to contribute images.
Public Art Research Archive is a pool of research materials on public art developed in collaboration with the History of Art, Design and Film staff. The Archive mainly consists of slides with a few video and audio tapes, and text along with other artifacts. Much of this material covers the city of Sheffield although other parts of the UK and Europe are covered. Most of the material is available on the Public Art Research Archive web pages.
The Public Monuments and Sculpture Association (PMSA) has been engaged in a national project to document all public monuments and sculptures in Britain. A team of Sheffield Hallam University staff are working on the survey of Sheffield and the surrounding area.
