As a Buttle UK Quality Mark holder, we are committed to supporting students from a care background. This means that we have dedicated services for you to access if you wish, whether you are a care leaver or have been in care in the past.
We can also help if you are currently in care and thinking of coming to university in the future.
What we can offer you
- a University care leaver coordinator - a dedicated link between you and your local authority
- help accessing all the University's support services
- help with your choices of course and accommodation
- entry onto our Compact scheme (subject to eligibility requirements)
Compact scheme
Students who have been in care for more than three months in the school years, including and after Year 10, are eligible to join our Compact scheme. As a Compact scheme member you can access extra support before enrolment, including
- a personal contact who can assist you during the application process and who is on hand to help with any queries you may have before your course begins
- special consideration during the admissions process (exceptional circumstances only)
- an exclusive e-newsletter about student life at the University
To apply, you need to make us aware of your care background when filling in your UCAS form and send us a Compact nomination form (Word 205KB).
Please provide the name, address and phone number of a referee who will verify that you have been in care for three months or more in the school years including and after year 10. The only people who may act as a referee for you are a member of your local authority education service, your social worker or a head teacher. If you are unsure whether your referee is suitable or if you are unable to find a referee, please email care@shu.ac.uk.
