Sheffield Hallam University and the Equality Act
From 1st October 2010, the equality act has replaced most of the Disability Discrimination act (DDA). The equality act 2010 aims to protect disabled people and prevent disability discrimination in the educational sector.
The Special Educational Needs and Education Act (SENDA) applies to anyone applying to, or studying at, University. The Act says that it will be unlawful to discriminate against disabled people or students by treating them less favourably than others and that universities and colleges will be required to provide certain types of reasonable adjustments to provision where disabled students or other disabled people might otherwise be substantially disadvantaged.
The Disability Rights Commission has produced a Post-16 Code of Practice which accompanies the Special Educational Needs and Disability Act 2001. The SKILL (National Bureau for Students with Disabilities) website also has plenty of useful information.
For more information on the support which the University offers disabled students look at the individual support section.
