Introduction to Disabled Student Support
Sheffield Hallam University is committed to policies and practices based on the principle of inclusion and this is reflected in the support we offer disabled students. This support is provided by the Disabled Student Support Team to all disabled students - full or part-time, undergraduate or postgraduate - and is available throughout your period of study at Sheffield Hallam.
The basis of this support is a belief that students should not be disadvantaged by their disability, whatever form it takes, and that a commitment to inclusion and equality of opportunity is intended to enable all students to realise their potential.
The University's teaching and learning practices are aimed at producing independent and autonomous learners and this applies to all students regardless of their ability or motivation to study. Students have, therefore, responsibility for their own learning, and the Disabled Student Support Team, in partnership with students and tutors, seeks to maximise this independence and autonomy.
The nature of our student support varies depending on the requirements of the individual. For many students, our role is to advise tutors about your requirements (with your permission) and much of the direct support will be provided by staff in your School. A key player in this team effort is your Disability Co-ordinator and you should make every effort to meet him or her as soon as possible. In other situations we might organise Learner Support sessions for deaf and hearing impaired students and students with dyslexia or specific learning difficulties - whatever is appropriate to your needs.
Please feel free to get in touch with the team if you would like any further information
