Mental health

The Wellbeing team/ Disabled Student Support team aim to provide a high level of support to students with Mental Health difficulties. The University recognises that mental health difficulties can present themselves in a variety of forms and Students can feel under pressure for many reasons and there may be occasions when mental health difficulties affect their ability to study or take part in the wider university life.

Nature of Disability

A significant proportion of people considering studying at Sheffield Hallam University have a mental health difficulty already and an increasing number disclose this before or when they enrol. However, many students still choose not to disclose at that point or they develop their mental health difficulty after they have started studying. Attendance and performance may become difficult which can result in a whole range of feelings, including low mood, isolation, frustration, anxiety and panic.

Services and support available

The Wellbeing team and Disabled student support can provide short and long term emotional and practical support for students experiencing mental health difficulties. Our focus is on the student as a learner and the impact that their mental health needs have on their studies. This ranges from monitoring and advising on coping strategies and can include working closely with a wide range of University and Community Services for signposting to additional support.
