Sheffield has two football clubs, Sheffield United ('The Blades') and Sheffield Wednesday ('The Owls').
The tradition of Sheffield Wednesday and Sheffield United stretches back almost to the time when football began in this county.
Both have illustrious histories and famous stadiums – Bramall Lane is the oldest stadium in the world still hosting professional football matches, having opened in 1855 as a cricket ground and hosted football matches since 1862. And Hillsborough is the largest stadium outside of the English Premier League, which hosted the World Cup in 1966 and the European Championship in 1996.
Sheffield also has the oldest football club in the world, Sheffield F.C., which dates from 1857. The club is also known for having devised the Sheffield Rules, a code of football which is widely recognised for its influence on how the modern game is played.
