Not just the home of the World Snooker Championship

Sheffield's Crucible Theatre may be best known for hosting the annual World Snooker Championship, but there's so much more to see at the city's most famous theatre.

The Grade II listed theatre opened in 1971 and sits in Tudor Square alongside The Lyceum. Both are part of the Sheffield Theatres group.

The Crucible TheatreShows are performed on a thrust stage, which enables the audience to watch the action on three separate sides. No part of the house is more than 20 metres from the action, so although The Crucible seats 980 people, audience members are guaranteed a great view.

Productions, which range from classical to modern theatre, typically feature minimal scenery to avoid blocking sightlines and concentrate on the detail of props and costumes instead.

In 2001 The Crucible was awarded the Barclays' Theatre of the Year' Award and in 2011, celebrated its 40th anniversary with the publication of a book commemorating its history.

The Studio

The 400-seat Studio Theatre is situated in the same building as The Crucible and has a flexible design which allows the seating to be adjusted to play on one, two or three sides or in the round.

It's home to a variety of smaller scale in-house and touring productions, as well as to the acclaimed Ensemble 360's tri-annual Music in the Round Festival.
