A creative community
Sheffield Institute of Arts (SIA) offers all the advantages of a creative learning community and everything you’d expect from a traditional art school. Our lively community nurtures an atmosphere which insists that anything is possible, and then provides the resources to make it happen. You’ll love being part of our community—not just while you’re here, but also the support and networking it will offer after you graduate.
A multi-disciplinary community
When people from different creative disciplines spend time together, new ideas start bursting out all over! At Sheffield Institute of Arts you’ll work in shared creative spaces, studios and workshops alongside other students, technicians and researchers working across other media.
A community with experts
You’ll be taught and supported by a wide range of practised specialists, including artists, designers and film-makers, who work here as tutors, technicians, researchers and academics. Their approach is relaxed and helpful, so you’ll feel comfortable asking questions or for help.
A multi-faculty community
Because we’re part of Sheffield Hallam University, you’ll live and work alongside people from a huge range of other courses, such as the sciences and engineering. There are regular opportunities to collaborate on projects with them, too, which will broader your horizons substantially. For example, there’s the Lab4Living, an exciting collaboration between Sheffield Institute of Arts and our Health and Social Care Research Centres.
An open community
Our internal creative community is enriched by the experience, talent and insights of external teachers and practitioners. We welcome back many of our graduates to teach or exhibit here, and also regularly invite visiting lecturers, practising artists and business people. We also go out into the wider community, undertaking public and private commissions as well as building relationships with external organisations.
An exhibiting community
Each year we put on Creative Spark, a public exhibition which gives our students the chance to showcase their innovation, creativity and imagination through their final-project work. The exhibition covers a wide range of creative disciplines, from fine art to photography, engineering and architecture.
An international community
At Sheffield Institute of Arts you could soon become part of an international community, building both friendships and professional connections:
- You could study abroad on an exchange programme with some of the best international learning institutions, right across Europe or as far afield as Australia or South Korea.
- There may also be overseas field trips : past destinations include New York, Prague, Barcelona, Berlin, Milan and Istanbul.
You may also be able to arrange work experience abroad ; past students have gone as far as Hong Kong and China.
