Lydia's story

‘It's been great studying at Hallam while competing for Team GB. The staff and students all wish you good luck before a big competition. In fact, I don’t think I’d be where I am now if I hadn’t come to Sheffield. The facilities are truly amazing – Don Valley, Ponds Forge, the English Institute of Sport – and there's great transport. Oh, and the killer hills keep you fit too.

I train at the English Institute for Sport. It has elite training facilities that anyone can use, including an indoor 200m track, basketball courts and a snooker academy. It's nice walking in for training and seeing famous sportspeople like Kelly Holmes and Ronnie O'Sullivan.

Teaching is something I've always wanted to do. When I was studying my undergraduate degree I volunteered in a primary school and my old secondary school. I want to inspire young kids. Being an international athlete you can make them think, ‘if my teacher can do it, so can I!’’
