Charlie’s story – Varsity 2012
Our annual sporting competition with the University of Sheffield is one of the best ways to experience the Sheffield Hallam team spirit.
After a nail-biting climax to the 2012 Varsity competition, we clinched the trophy for the ninth year running.
Over 1800 students took part in the competition, consisting of more than 60 fixtures in sports ranging from ultimate frisbee to rugby.
Incredibly, the scores stood at 31 points each going into the final fixture, the men's first team football match at Hillsborough stadium - officiated by world cup final referee, Howard Webb MBE.
BSc Sport Business Management student Charlie Weir scored the only goal of the game in front of over 4,500 spectators. This gave us the overall win by just a single point and sparked mass celebrations amongst the crowd.
'The experience was amazing. To play at a prestigious stadium like Hillsborough is a real treat and scoring the goal that won Varsity for Sheffield Hallam was a fantastic feeling, one I'll never forget. I knew just how much that goal meant to the team and to all our supporters. Being booked by Howard Webb was the icing on the cake!'
The 2013 competition promises to be bigger and better than ever before, as we aim for a decade undefeated as Varsity champions.
