Enterprise Challenge 2010

Events programme

Enterprise Challenge events are open to everyone, not just competition entrants, and places are allocated on a first come first served basis (with the exception of the Pizza Game and Mentoring sessions). All of our events are free but a £5 refundable deposit is required to reserve a place at the Pizza Game workshop.

If you have entered the Enterprise Challenge you are required to attend at least two of the sessions to progress through the competition. Places at events are limited so it is essential that you book your place. A full description of each session is given below the timetable.

Please note, the mentoring masterclass is only open to those entrants who have been assigned a mentor, and does not count as one of the two required sessions for progression through the competition.

Descriptions

Pizza Game
A fun evening with free pizza. Play the pizza game, a fun business simulation to test your business acumen. We will put you in teams and the team with the highest profit will win prizes. A £5 deposit is needed to book your place on this session, but you get it back when you turn up. Places are limited to the first 24 to turn up with their deposit.

Business start-up 101
This session is really useful if you have a great business idea but you haven't really done anything about it yet. It's an introduction to starting a business that will give you all the next step information you need to take your idea from dream to reality.

Industrial espionage
Find out who your competitors are, what they are doing and even how much they are doing it for. The first half of this session will tell you how to get that all important competitor information, then the second half will tell you how to protect your ideas. False glasses and noses optional!

Masterclass - visions and perceptions into action
This masterclass is a really interactive session to get you to focus on the specifics of how you're going to turn your idea into a reality. Run by Jonny Douglas, a successful product designer and Sheffield Hallam graduate, this session will really get you fired up.

A business plan - what's that?
As your idea progresses towards a business, people are going to want to see it written down in black and white. This session will guide you through what people expect to see in a business plan - and what they don't!

Masterclass - mentoring for mentees
This is a closed session which is only for entrants assigned a mentor, it is a compulsory part of being a mentee and does not count towards workshops for progression in the Enterprise Challenge.

Money - how much do I need and where can I get it?
Exactly what it says on the tin - this session will look at cash flow forecasting so you can work out how much money you are going to need to get your business of the ground and then where you can get money from.

Masterclass - the negotiator!
Another of our vibrant, interactive masterclasses by Jonny Douglas. Learn how to get the outcomes you need. Not just for business this one!

How to make friends and influence people
Networking is just a scary word for meeting people. This session will help you understand why networking is important to business success. You'll find out what networking is and more importantly what it isn't, plus hints and tips for those awkward moments and most importantly, how to follow up on the contacts you've made.

How to make money - how to sell whatever it is!
Whether you're setting up your own fashion design consultancy or formulating a range of eco-friendly weed killers, if your business is going to work you need to be able to sell the goods or services you're offering. This session looks at marketing in terms of where and when, but also how... what makes a good marketing campaign?

Money needn't be taxing
Make sure you know your legal obligations with this basic introduction to tax and VAT - a must for anyone about to start-up in business and absolutely essential for anyone already trading who hasn't considered tax yet.

Going up?
There are lots of occasions when you will be expected to do an elevator pitch for your business - for the bank, for potential investors, for big customers, or even for our own dragons if you are lucky enough to get through to the final stage of the Enterprise Challenge!
