1st prize: Andrew Asquith and Oliver Hemstock, Highball Climbing
Andy and Ollie won the top prize of £5000 in cash, in addition to £1000 of accountancy support from sponsors Hart Shaw and £1000 of legal support from sponsors hlw Law. Highball has developed a series of freestanding home installation climbing walls that can be easily installed and relocated. The company also provides a bespoke wall design and build service. Oliver is currently studying for a BSc Architectural Technology.
2nd prize: Vanessa Linley, Petsox
Vanessa won £2000 in cash and also won the audience vote at the Enterprise & Innovation Dinner, to scoop a further £1000, in addition to £1000 of accountancy support from sponsors Hart Shaw and £750 of legal support from sponsors hlw Law. Petsox produces custom protective coverings for animal bandages and casts. The product - a sock designed to remain comfortably fitted in place even during movement, has a non slip sole and a 100% waterproof layer that is unique to the market.
Initially aimed at directly supplying veterinary surgeries, the business hopes to expand in to domestic sales through supermarkets, pet stores and online retailers. Vanessa is studying for a BSc Forensic Biosciences.
2008
1st prize - Netty Reddish, The Design and Make Bus
Netty won the top prize of £5,000 in cash, in addition to £1,000 of office/meeting space from Omnia Offices and £1,000 of accountancy support from Hart Shaw. Netty runs The Design and Make Bus, which travels round to schools, community groups and fairs to teach children design and technology. Netty Reddish graduated last year with a MA in metalwork and jewellery.
2nd prize - Pete Roberts, The Brew Company
Pete won £2,000 in cash for his Sheffield based independent brewery, The Brew Company. Pete developed and launched his own range of real ales. In addition to selling to pubs, Pete also has a mobile beer outlet selling beer at outdoor events, weddings and parties. Pete is a current studying part-time for an MSc in Management.
3rd prize - Ian Adams and Nathan Roper, Stuff-In Oatcakes
Ian and Nathan won £1,000 in cash and also won the audience vote at the Enterprise and Innovation Dinner, scooping a further £1,000. Ian and Nathan produce Staffordshire-style oatcakes with a range of hot fillings. Their business is a social enterprise which not only employs and trains homeless people, but also uses profits to fund housing for the homeless and vulnerable. Ian is currently studying for a Diploma in Professional Housing Studies.
Runners up
Clare Graham and Paul Yiend, SB Matrix
Paul and Clare have developed an innovative product for Universities to manage work placement opportunities. Paul graduated with an MSc in Multimedia Education.
Lee Hardy and Matthew Milner, Oztic IT
Lee and Matt are successfully running Oztic IT which provides IT solutions for small and medium businesses in South Yorkshire. Lee and Matt both graduated with a BSc in Computing.
Sally Fawcett, Sally Fawcett Physiotherapy
Sally graduated with a BSc in Physiotherapy and has used her skills to start her business providing physiotherapy and personal training together.
2007
1st prize - Glenda Kirby, Sheffielders Care
Glenda won the top prize of £5,000 in cash and £3,000 of office/meeting space from Omnia Offices. Glenda's socially driven enterprise aims to sell reusable carry bags to raise funds for charity. The idea came after Glenda's son was in intensive care and this became her way of saying thank you to the hospital for their help. Glenda graduated in 2004 with a BA in Packaging Design.
2nd prize - Jamie Chaplin-Brice, Wudwork
Jamie won £2,500 in cash. Jamie's innovative and eco-friendly venture aims to design and manufacture sustainable furniture using local materials. He has already gained a significant amount of experience in this specialist field, following a range of jobs and projects he has undertaken. Jamie has just graduated with a BA in Furniture and Product Design.
3rd prize - Amy Wilkinson, Ebony and Ivory
Amy won £1,500 in cash and £1,000 of business support from UK Steel Enterprises.
Amy plans to open a black and white themed café by day and wine bar by night in Sheffield, after gaining a wealth of skills and experience through work at various hotels and restaurants. Amy has just graduated with a first class BSc in Hospitality Business Management with Culinary Arts and Wine.
4th prize - Angela Diskin, Flaneur Prints
Angela won £1,000 in cash and £2,000 of marketing advice from Business Link South Yorkshire. Angela plans to design, manufacture and brand an exclusive range of menswear accessories, specifically for tailoring outlets. She will also offer a bespoke service to tailors wanting to update and extend their range of fabrics. Angela has specialised in menswear for several years and is currently studying for an MA in Design.
5th prize - Leigh Davidson, Data Bitz
Leigh won £750 in cash and £2,000 of accountancy advice from Hart Shaws. Leigh's business objective is to supply and support UK businesses with network and cabling communication products via the internet. He has three years experience in the telecommunications industry and has worked with some of the largest suppliers in the business. Leigh is currently studying for a BSc in Business Communications.
6th prize - Xi and Christopher Huang-Leaver, X&C
Xi and Christopher won £500 cash. Christopher and Xi's online company aims to match tutors with potential tutees. Xi has extensive experience of service development within the public sector and is studying for a BA in Accounting. Christopher, a real time software engineer, has a wide knowledge of IT development, including work for the NHS and University of Sheffield.
2006
1st prize - Allen Holland and William Parsons, Wares Ltd
Allen and William won £5,000 plus £1,500 of legal support from Franks & Co and £1,000 of managed office services from Omnia Offices. Wares is an exciting new product design company set up to develop and license in-house designs and to offer design and development solutions to outsourcing companies. Allen graduated in 2006 with an MA in Industrial Design Innovation and William graduated in 2005 with a BA in Product Design.
2nd prize - Michael Ord, Personal Hair Account
Michael won £3,000 plus £1,500 of legal support from Franks & Co. Michael is re-engineering the hair cut experience and customer supplier experience through the integration of technology and relationship marketing. Michael has four years experience as a sales and marketing manager and is currently studying for an MSc in Marketing Management.
3rd prize - Joe Knight, Unique FX
Joe won £2,000 plus £500 of business support from Sheffield Technology Parks. Joe has developed a unique marketing service for Exhibitions and Tradeshows by combining magic allusion and the company's message, product or service. Joe has over 17 years magical experience which includes full tours with TV magician Wayne Dobson. Joe is currently studying for a BA in PR and Communication Studies.
4th prize - Antonella Giomarelli, Antonella Giomarelli
Antonella won £1,500 plus £1,500 of legal support from Franks & Co. Antonella is launching a workshop facility for aspiring jewellery artists. She is also planning to launch her own range of contemporary jewellery. Antonella has just graduated with a BA in Metalwork and Jewellery.
5th prize - Dave Woolley and Michael Francis, Pixelsquare
Dave and Michael won £1,000 plus £1,000 of mentoring from South Yorkshire Investment Fund and £750 of managed office services from Omnia Offices. Dave and Michael provide IT solutions to SMEs focusing on web design and development with the aim of developing a one stop shop for IT services. Dave is currently studying for a BSc in Software Engineering and Michael is currently studying for a BA in Business Studies.
6th prize - Mike Garth, Sun 1400
Mike won £750 plus £750 of managed office services from Omnia Offices. Mike has set up a performance coaching consultancy to give tools, techniques and services to the corporate market. Mike has 12 years experience in professional motor racing and graduated in 2005 with an MSc in Sport and Exercise Science (Psychology).
7th prize - Paul Leedham, 360 Innovations
Paul won £500 plus £1,000 of mentoring from South Yorkshire Investment Fund and £500 of managed office services from Omnia Offices. Paul is developing an incident capture unit for the automotive support and manufacturing markets. Paul has seven years experience in electrical engineering and is currently studying for an MSc in Engineering and Information Technology.
