Research funding
Research Council funding
There are seven grant awarding research councils offering funding for different areas of postgraduate study. For full details of these government-funded agencies, including subject areas covered and how to apply, visit the Research Councils UK website.
Charities and trusts
You can often apply for partial funding from charities, foundations and trusts, depending on what course you are taking. These can be in the form of studentships, scholarships and bursaries.
Professional and career development loans
Postgraduate and part-time students may be able to take out a professional and career development loan and borrow between £300 and £10,000. The loan is similar to a bank loan except the Learning and Skills Council pay the interest on the loan while you're studying. When you finish studying, you then pay interest at the rate fixed when you took out the loan.
To apply, contact a participating bank, such as Barclays and the Co-operative Bank.
Disabled students' allowances
UK and EU students with a disability or learning difficulty can apply for disabled student allowances if enrolled on a course and eligible for maintenance support. For full details of the eligibility criteria, visit our disabled students' allowances webpage.
The allowances help pay for extra costs you may have when studying as a direct result of your disability or learning difficulty. It can help with the cost of a non-medical personal helper, items of specialist equipment, travel and other course related costs.
If you are not receiving an NHS bursary, you should apply to Student Finance England, Student Finance Wales, Student Finance Northern Ireland or the Student Awards Agency for Scotland. If you are receiving a bursary, you need to apply to your funding body.
