Tuition fees and bursaries

Fees for full-time undergraduate courses starting in 2010

Like most other universities, we will be charging a £3,290 annual fee for full time UK and EU students for 2010 entry. We want to support students as much as we can, so we have two types of bursaries available - described below.

You do not have to pay your fees upfront

You can take out a tuition fee loan which you will not have to start repaying until after you leave your course and are earning above a minimum amount decided by the government (currently £15,000 a year). You will then repay the tuition fee loan through deductions from your salary.

Non-repayable maintenance grants are available for some students
Depending on your family or personal circumstances you may be entitled to a grant. The maximum grant amounts for students living in the UK for 2010/11 is

  • £2,906 a year for students who normally live in England

Fees while you are on a work placement
At Sheffield Hallam University, the fee for the work placement year of any sandwich course for UK / EU students will be £655 for 2010/11 (this means we charge a lower fee for the work placement year).

You can add the placement year fee to your tuition fee loan or pay it back in two staged payments during the placement year.

Department of Health funded courses
If you are studying a course funded by the Department of Health (nursing or health care) you will not pay any fees yourself, as they will be paid for you by the Department of Health. You will therefore not be eligible for the bursaries described below.

EU students only
If you are an EU student from outside of the UK, you will not have to pay fees before you join the University or while you are studying. Like UK students, you will be able to take out a tuition fee loan, which you will not have to repay until after you leave the course and are earning above a minimum amount decided by the UK Government (between £9,000 to £15,000 depending upon which EU country you live in).

Sheffield Hallam University Bursary scheme

A bursary is a grant of money made to a student. We have two types of bursaries available, both of which we pay through the Student Loans Company. Even if you are not applying for any statutory student funding, you still need to sign and date the Student's Declaration and provide bank details on the PN1 form available on www.direct.gov.uk .

This will allow us to pay a bursary to you through the Student Loans Company if you meet our bursary criteria.

You can use this money for any aspect of course-related costs and you will not have to repay this money. A large number of our students are eligible for a bursary payment of up to £1,000 for each year of taught full-time study with us. We do not pay bursaries for the work experience year of a sandwich course, as we charge a lower fee for this part of your course.

The bursaries we offer to full-time eligible students who join us in 2010 are as follows

'Sheffield Hallam Grant' Bursary

If you are a new student in 2010 and receive the maximum higher education maintenance grant or special support grant from the government (£2,906 for students who normally reside in England), you will qualify for our Sheffield Hallam Grant bursary of £700. We pay this to eligible full-time students for each taught year of undergraduate study.

(If you are already a student at the University, please see shuspace for details of the Sheffield Hallam Grant Bursary criteria that apply to you).

'Sheffield Hallam Partnership' Bursary (formerly 'Hallam Access' Bursary)

We want to encourage students who may be thinking of studying at higher education level but who live in areas where it may be less common for people to go to university.

We have enhanced our partnerships with schools and colleges to create opportunities to support these students.

If your school or college is on this list you will receive the bursary worth £300 to eligible full-time students for each taught year of undergraduate study.

You do not need to apply for these bursaries - we will know if you are eligible from the information that we receive from the Student Loans Company and from UCAS. If you are eligible for any of the bursaries, we will write to you to inform you in January 2011.

We will pay you during late February 2011. We will only be able to pay you if Student Finance Direct correctly lists your course, year and university.

Please note the bursaries described above are for 2010 entry. If you defer entry to the University the bursary schemes available to you will be the ones that apply in your year of entry.
