Finding a course and applying
What career do you want?
Our courses are designed to prepare you for the world of work. Make sure you think clearly about what career direction you're going to take. For some careers such as nursing or teaching, you need a particular qualification to get started.
Talk to a careers adviser, either through your school or college or at your local careers advice centre. Talk to your family, friends and teachers. Come to one of our open days and speak to current students and University staff.
Which subjects are you interested in?
At university level, you can study a wider range of subjects than at college or sixth form.
For example, if you enjoy biology at A level, you could study biochemistry, medical sciences or forensic biosciences, among others. If you like English, we offer English literature, journalism, creative writing or primary school teaching.
Check out our online prospectus, where you can search our courses, create your own personalised prospectus, and compare different courses side by side.
Our UCAS code name is SHU and our number is S21. The UCAS code for each course is listed in its entry in our online prospectus.
Things to consider when choosing the right course for you
- What do you want to do after uni - do you need a specific qualification for your dream job?
- What subjects are you interested in?
- Would you like to study more than one subject? We offer a range of joint honours courses combining more than one subject.
Top tips
- Talk to your friends, family, or teachers at school or college
- Make a list of your strengths and what you enjoy
- Do some background reading on the subjects you are interested in, or see if you can arrange some work experience.
How to apply
Once you've decided what course you want to study, the next step is applying. You do this directly to the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service (UCAS).
