BSc (Hons) Building Construction Management

This course is part of the Summer School Programme. This is a final year degree continuation from the Advanced Diploma in Technology (Building) studied in Malaysia. The course has been designed to enhance the professional skills and knowledge you have gained in your Advanced Diploma.
The University has validated your study at TAR College and has approved an additional programme of 'professionally-based' units, which will, when taken following your TAR College Advanced Diploma, give you a total study experience worthy of recognition as a UK Building Construction Management degree.
The programme you will undertake here at Sheffield Hallam comprises 60 credits of work at UK degree level 6.
Entry Requirements
This course is available to students who have completed the Advanced Diploma in Technology (Building) at Tunku Abdul Rahman College, Malaysia in 1999 or after.
Units of Study
Your semester at Sheffield will comprise of four compulsory units of study:
• Construction Professional Studies
This unit is designed to provide for the professional development of the undergraduate building construction management student. The unit provides the opportunity for the student to develop and demonstrate key management-related skills and knowledge, necessary for the practising construction professional.
Formal lectures are used to introduce construction management-related topics. Tutorials provide for a high level of student participation and are structured so as to provide the opportunity for the delivery and assessment of student-centred seminars.
• Integrated Project
This unit provides for the development of a holistic approach to the management of a construction company. It has been recognised by various professional institutions that the construction-related professions need to work more cohesively.
Students will develop and demonstrate an understanding of the internal and external contexts of managing a construction business.
• Management Theory and Application
This unit provides the opportunity for students to acquire a detailed knowledge of management theories as applied to construction organisations and projects.
Students will apply management theories to construction related situations while developing key subject specific skills of an interdisciplinary problem solving nature applicable to management theories and applications.
• Production Organisation and Human Resource Management
With the clear need for construction organisations to work efficiently and cost effectively, this unit provides for the understanding and evaluation of key factors employed in developing effective production management systems. The unit deals with current issues and methods of effectively planning, progressing and managing people and projects within the built environment.
Assessment
You must achieve an overall mark of 40% to pass a unit. Three of the four units are assessed by continuous assessment. The unit Production Organisation and Human Resource Management is assessed by both continuous assessment (50%) and examination (50%).
