BA (Hons) Business with Marketing

Katherine Gardiner

Course Leader: Katherine Gardiner k.m.gardiner@shu.ac.uk

This course is part of the Summer School Programme. It is designed to a final year degree continuation from the Advanced Diploma in Business Studies (Marketing) studied in Malaysia. The course has been designed to broaden and deepen the knowledge you have gained in your Advanced Diploma.

The University has recognised your study at TAR College, and has approved an additional programme of 'business-based' units which will, when taken following your TAR College Advanced Diploma, give you a total study experience worthy of recognition as a UK Business honours degree. The programme you will undertake here at Sheffield comprises 60 credits of work at UK degree level 6.

Entry Requirements
This course is only available for students who have completed their Advanced Diploma at Tunku Abdul Rahman College in Malaysia in or after 1999.

Units of Study
You will study three compulsory units which build on your level Advanced Diploma studies.

The outline structure of the degree course, for ADBS (Marketing) diplomates, is as follows:

• Contemporary Issues in International Business
You will have considered some aspects of international business in modules taken earlier in your course and will do so again in the ISO module. This module is concerned with techniques, strategies and policies relevant to international firms and also covers the key features of the international business environment. The module aims to integrate these techniques and strategies with the knowledge you have gained about the international business environment and apply them to the principal contemporary activities and developments that are taking place at the time the module is delivered.

• International Strategic Operations
This module builds upon the International Business Environment unit studied at TARC and complements the Contemporary Issues in International Business module. In the global marketplace the effective management of strategic business is a critical factor of success. This module examines the range of strategies available to international companies to achieve their goals and the methods used to manage and control international operations within a dynamic global business environment.

• Product Innovation and Creativity
Increasingly innovation and new product development is the key for organisations looking to deliver sustainable competitive advantage in dynamic organisations. The sophistication of consumers is growing as is the plethora of products and services offered by organisations in innumerable markets. However, simply creating an increasing range of products for the ever increasing appetite of consumers will not, in itself, sustain an organisation over the longer term.

Successful organisations nowadays, seek to distinguish themselves from their peers by developing and offering something to consumers that is significantly different. And often, with distinction, comes a premium price-tag, thereby delivering greater organisational wealth and a source of organisational longevity.

By the end of this module, students will be able to identify how innovation and new product development can contribute to an organisation's performance and assist development of sustainable competitive advantage; apply the process of innovation and new product development; evaluate alternative new product development projects; and compare techniques of product management throughout the life of a product.

Assessment
Every unit is assessed by both coursework and examination. You must achieve an overall mark of 40% to pass a unit.
