This one semester course is part of the University's Summer School programme for successful TAR College students. By the end of the course students will be able to explain financial concepts and principles, discuss the financial and business environment in which financial decisions are made, produce solutions to business problems thorugh the application of financial knowledge and understanding and present and communicate relevant financial information to a variety of audiences.
Entry requirements
The course is only available to students who have successfully completed the Advanced Diploma in Business Studies (Finance and Investment) at TAR College's Kuala Lumpur campus since 1999.
Modules of study
Students are required to take three mandatory modules as indicated below:
• Corporate Finance
This module explores how developments in modern financial theory are applied to listed corporates. You will learn about current and developing corporate financing issues, both from the point of view of the provider of funds and from the point of view of the user of funds. Through the use of specific mini-case studies you will be able to reflect on, and develop opinions about, issues in corporate finance. For example, you will develop a critical understanding of how instruments such as convertible loan stocks are priced, and you will appreciate the benefits and drawbacks of such instruments from the corporate's point of view.
The module will be delivered through both lectures and seminars. Students will be encouraged to participate actively in seminars. The assessment for the module will be based on both coursework and examination. The coursework will consist of a group project which will apply the principles of corporate finance to a specific UK listed company. The final examination will require students to understand topics covered during the module, and will consist of a mix of numeric and non-numeric questions.
This module is assessed by coursework (25%) and examination (75%).
• Corporate Treasury Management
This module focuses on the role of a corporate treasurer in a major company from any sector apart from that of financial services. The module aims to develop an awareness of financial risk management principles, to formulate , in company specific situations, financial risk management packages which include derivatives, develop an awareness of the factors which determine the relationship between major corporates and their banks, develop an ability to undertake critical analysis of the principles and practice of capital structure and company valuation and develop an insight into the ways in which the performance of the corporate treasury function may be measured and controlled.
This module is assessed by coursework (80%) amd examination (20%).
• Risk Management and Investment
Lectures and handouts will introduce the concepts of risk, risk measurement, risk modelling, risk management and fund/asset management. Students will develop their knowledge via directed learning and the seminars will be used for discussion and formative learning.
The material introduced in the module will build up a coherent 'toolbox' of knowledge that will then be synthesised through the development of sophisticated investment portfolios, which, for example may form the basis of some of the coursework. Other coursework tasks may include phase tests to test students' knowledge and understanding of key concepts.
Assessment
You must achieve an overall mark of 40% to pass a unit.
Honours classification will be based on a 25 per cent weighting for results from level 5 units studied on the Advanced Diploma at TAR College and a 75 per cent weighting for the three modules studied at Sheffield Hallam.
