Course Leader: Katherine Gardiner k.m.gardiner@shu.ac.uk

This course is part of the Summer School Programme. It is designed to provide an education in human resource management studies that will build on the attainment of the Advanced Diploma in Business Studies (Human Resource Management), studied in Malaysia.

The course aims to provide an understanding of the changing environment in which business processess take place, their impact on organisations and the way they are managed.

Entry Requirements
This course is only available for students who have completed their Advanced Diploma in Business Studies (Human Resource Management) at Tunku Abdul Rahman College in Malaysia in 1999 or after 1999.

Units of Study
You will study three compulsory units which build on your level Advanced Diploma studies.

Contemporary Issues in International Business
You will have considered some aspects of international business in modules taken earlier in your course and will do so again in the ISO module. These modules are concerned with techniques, strategies and policies relevant to international firms and also cover the key features of the international business environment. This module aims to integrate these techniques and strategies with the knowledge you have gained about the international business environment and apply them to the principal contemporary activities and developments that are taking place at the time the module is delivered.

International Strategic Operations
When competing in the global marketplace, the effective management of strategic business is a critical factor of success. This module examines the range of strategies available to international companies to achieve their goals and the methods used to manage and control international operations within a dynamic global business environment.

Performance Management
An HR approach is taken to the study of this module which will be different to the approach taken at TAR College. The module starts by examining what is meant by performance and links that to the important HR activity of Performance management. Several of the important influences on performance several of which form part of a performance management system are analysed in depth starting with recruitment and selection and including talent management, career planning and retention. Other important aspects of a performance management system are also studied including exit management, managing under-performance and absence management. Assessment for the module is partly by coursework and partly by exam with the coursework providing formative feedback which will be useful preparation for the exam.

Assessment
Every unit is assessed by both coursework and examination. You must achieve an overall mark of 40% to pass a unit.
