BA (Hons) International Business

Course Leader: Michael Hunt m.c.hunt@shu.ac.uk
This course is part of the Summer School Programme. It is a final year degree continuation from the Advanced Diploma in Business Studies (International Business) studied in Malaysia. The course has been designed to broaden and deepen the knowledge you have gained in your Advanced Diploma.
The University has recognised your study at TARC, and has approved an additional programme of 'business based' units which will, when taken following your TARC Advanced Diploma, give you a total study experience worthy of recognition as a UK business degree. The programme you will undertake here at Sheffield comprises 60 credits of work at UK degree level 6.
Entry Requirements
This course is only available for students who have completed their Advanced Diploma at Tunku Abdul Rahman College in Malaysia in 1999 or after 1999.
Units of Study
You will study three compulsory units which build on your level Advanced Diploma studies.
• Business in Emerging Markets
The volatile emerging markets offer enormous opportunities and risks for firms from developed countries. These countries are often rich in natural resources and have a high demand for capital goods and a wide range of products and services. They are also favoured locations for manufacturing firms wishing to exploit cheap labour, low taxes and minimum regulation. Integrating these markets into the world capitalist system is a challenge for national governments and for supranational institutions such as the regional blocks (EU, NAFTA, ASEAN, APEC, MERCOSUR, ALADI etc) and trans-national organisations (WTO, IBRD, IMF, EBRD). These markets have great potential for growth and therefore they attract portfolio investment from the financial institutions. Much of the economic development and manufacturing operations is impacting on the natural environment. Emerging markets are where 80% of the world's population live and where population growth is at its most rapid. Anyone with an interest in international business, environmental issues, and the growth and expansion of the world economy and population will have an acute interest in emerging markets.
Assessment will take the form of group work (10%), an individual written assignment (20%) and a 3 hour unseen written examination (70%).
• E-Business Management
E-Business has the potential to change how we conduct business. These changes affect not only the individual company and their products, but entire industries leading to the development of new and diverse business models. The far reaching impact of E-Business has important considerations for the development and implementation of business strategy. Given the growth in these developments, it is important that students are aware of the issues involved in the successful management of E-Business.
Assessment is through a combination of coursework (50%) and examination (50%).
• Global Governance
This module is designed to provide students with a broad-based understanding of global governance from the perspective of international business. It focuses on the institutions and processes established to deal with issues relating to global trade, global finance and distributions of global wealth and power. Specific attention will be given to institutional mechanisms for agenda setting, interest aggregation, negotiation, conflict resolution and regulation.
The underlying theme of the module is that international business is shaped and constrained by increasingly complex regulatory mechanisms and therefore students of the subject need to be acquainted with these mechanisms. After studying this module, students will have gained knowledge and understanding of the international system in which contemporary international business is conducted.
Assessment will be by means of an unseen, written examination (75%) and coursework (25%).
Assessment
Every unit is assessed by both coursework and examination. You must achieve an overall mark of 40% to pass a unit.
