BSc (Hons) Quantity Surveying Studies

This course is part of the Summer School Programme. This is a final year degree continuation from the Advanced Diploma in Technology (Building) studied in Malaysia. The course has been designed to enhance the professional skills and knowledge you have gained in your Advanced Diploma.
The University has validated your study at TAR College and has approved an additional programme of 'professionally-based' units, which will, when taken following your TAR College Advanced Diploma, give you a total study experience worthy of recognition as a UK Quantity Surveying Studies degree.
The programme you will undertake here at Sheffield Hallam comprises 60 credits of work at UK degree level 6.
Entry Requirements
This course is available to students who have completed the Advanced Diploma in Technology (Building) or (Quantity Surveying) at Tunku Abdul Rahman College, Malaysia.
Units of Study
Your semester at Sheffield will comprise of four compulsory units of study:
• Quantity Surveying Practice
This unit helps students to develop an understanding of the role played by the quantity surveyor within the current Built Environment context. The module focuses upon developing an understanding of the industrial sectors and procurement processes in which the quantity surveyor operates.
Professional ethic are evaluated and analysed within the quantity surveyors operational role.
• Cost Studies
This unit is designed to provide for the application of cost planning methodology to the design of complexed buildings. Life cycle cost appraisal, development appraisal techniques along with value management techniques are explored.
An understanding of the practices of cost modelling and the utilisation of computer software will form an active part of this module.
Formal lectures are used to introduce quantity surveying related topics. Tutorials provide for a high level of student participation and are structured so as to provide the opportunity for the delivery and assessment of student-centred seminars.
• Integrated Project
This unit provides for the development of a holistic approach to the management of a construction company. It has been recognised by various professional institutions that the construction-related professions need to work more cohesively.
Students will develop and demonstrate an understanding of the internal and external contexts of managing a construction business.
• Management Theory and Application
This unit provides the opportunity for students to acquire a detailed knowledge of management theories as applied to construction organisations and projects.
Students will apply management theories to construction related situations while developing key subject specific skills of an interdisciplinary problem solving nature applicable to management theories and applications.
Assessment
You must achieve an overall mark of 40% to pass a unit. Three of the four units are assessed by continuous assessment. The unit of Cost Studies is assessed by continuous assessment (50%) and examination (50%).
