IELTS examinations
The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is the world’s proven English test. Over 1.4 million candidates take the test each year to start their journeys into international education and employment.
In IELTS, there are four papers: Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking. There are two different IELTS modules: Academic and General Training. The Speaking and Listening tests are the same in both modules, but the Reading and Writing tests are different.
Sheffield Hallam University is the only IELTS testing centre in Sheffield. We run exams on a monthly basis. The IELTS exam fee is currently £125

If you would like to apply for an IELTS exam on or after 10 March 2012 you can now apply online. Please go to the British Council IELTS site and follow the instructions. The new system is easy to use and allows you to book a test immediately (however the place is not confirmed until, we have received payment, photos and a copy of the ID document).
This new online system also includes the option to view results online 13 days after the test and/or receive results by text. Applying online also gives FREE Access to Road to IELTS Online preparation course
Road to IELTS is a self study course written by British Council to prepare for the IELTS exam. The course is organized into units based on commonly used IELTS topics and each unit covers all four sections of the exam (reading, listening, writing and speaking). When applying online the British Council will offer the Road to IELTS Online which consists of access to 3 units (30 hours) of this course for FREE.

To apply for the IELTS exam at Sheffield Hallam University, complete an application form – please be sure to sign the ‘Declaration’ on the final page – and send to us with
- 2 identical passport-sized photographs – you must NOT wear glasses in the photographs you submit (please sign the back of one)
- A photocopy of your passport or national ID card (which must be valid and presented on the day of your exam)
- Payment of £125.00 – by cheque or postal order (payable to ‘Sheffield Hallam University’) or debit/credit card in person.
Please see the checklist at the back of the application form to make sure you have enclosed all the necessary documents. Applications which are incomplete will be rejected and sent back to you by post.
Candidates can apply in person at Sheffield Hallam University and pay for your exam. The opening times are
Monday - Thursday 08:45 - 17:15
Friday 08:45 - 16:45
However you MUST bring with you
- The completed application form
- Two passport sized photographs (you must not be wearing glasses in the photographs)
- A photocopy of your passport
If you do not bring these documents with you, we cannot accept your application.
We will send confirmation of your exam date by email. Please check your email account before contacting Sheffield Hallam University about your exam application. Please read the email attachments carefully as they will tell you important information about your exam.
