I came to Sheffield Hallam in 2004 having previously teaching academic and general English for four years in private language schools and state colleges and universities in the UK and overseas.

From 2004–2012 I worked as an associate lecturer on a range of English language courses to improve students' reading, speaking, listening and writing skills, and to prepare them for education courses at undergraduate or postgraduate level.

I've also taught on the University English Scheme, including English for academic purposes, study skills, general and social English, and grammar and pronunciation workshops.

In addition, I've helped to write, assess and invigilate end of semester examinations. Other duties have included mentoring and assisting with the induction of new members of staff.

I've also taught trainee English teachers on the Trinity Certificate English Language course.

Since April 2012, I've been employed on a permanent basis as course leader for English for nursing and English for radiation therapy physics on the Iraq Healthcare Project. This has involved close cross-disciplinary and faculty liaison to plan and design courses to improve both English language abilities and subject-specific language awareness.

I'm also an assignment tutor on the English for Academic Purposes Theory and Practice module.

Teaching and scholarly interests

The vast majority of the students I meet are from countries with different cultural and educational practices. Modes of participation, such as the relationship between teacher and student, learning styles and approaches to learning, are often very different.

My primary interest is helping students adjust to and assimilate new academic practices, such as involvement in participation-based learning.

I also enjoy teaching academic writing to international students.

Research interests

The extent to which international students' prior academic experience impacts on their UK student experience.
