Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Can I enter the programme at any point?
A: Except for the dissertation stage of the MA, in theory, yes, as the programme as a whole is modularised. This means that modules can be taken in isolation. You can accumulate credits and modules over a period of time to suit you and your working environment, though we recommend that you follow the ‘normal’ pattern as set out in the relevant information sheets as this means you will be part of a larger group of people working simultaneously towards the same goal.
Q: Can I opt to take just the Trinity College LTCL qualification?
A: Yes. However, it is probably in your interests to complete the work required for the award of the University’s Postgraduate Certificate as this forms a common core and would provide you with an extra qualification for the same amount of work.
Q: What kind of currency do the qualifications have?
A: The University qualifications are essentially academic in nature whilst the Trinity College London ones are professionally inclined. This is why we favour the hybrid system. The Trinity qualifications are internationally recognised by the British Council.
Q: What would be the overall time-scale for completion of the entire programme?
A: There is no one answer to this. The programme exists to meet the needs of a very diverse populace and to fit into their professional lives. It is possible to go all the way through the programme without any gaps (you would require a certain amount of teaching experience before you commenced on the Trinity College Certificate in this instance in order to fulfil criteria required by later stages in the programme), though, in practice, most people take some time out of the programme in order to broaden their experience and to plan their career paths. The flexibility of the programme means that you can spread the time spent on study over a number of years and use it as a source of continuing professional development and up-dating to allow you to enhance both your career and employment prospects.
Q: Do I need to be a graduate to undertake any of the postgraduate parts of the programme?
A: Not necessarily. Providing you can demonstrate an aptitude for study at this level, a first degree is not a pre-requisite. Under these circumstances you would need to provide evidence of relevant work and/or study experience. However, bear in mind that some teaching posts, both in the UK and in other countries, require a first degree.
Q: Do you offer a full-time MA TESOL that I can complete in one year and immediately after my first degree?
A: No. However, an MA in Education is available which has some optional TESOL components. For admission to that course you must have at least two years teaching experience.
Q: Can I progress to the MA TESOL directly after my Trinity or Cambridge Diploma?
A: Yes. We recognise the professional commitment that you have demonstrated in order to gain such awards. You will be exempted from the one-year postgraduate certificate stage of the MA programme and will be able to start at the postgraduate diploma stage.
Q: If I am not sure which qualification or entry point is suitable for me, what should I do?
A: The best thing is to e-mail the TESOL Centre (tesol@shu.ac.uk) or to phone (0114 225 2240) and ask to speak to one of the academic tutors who can assess your circumstances and give you the relevant advice.
