How is the University governed and managed?

The governance and strategic decision making structure of the University includes the University Executive Group which is chaired by the Vice-Chancellor, the Board of Governors and the Academic Board.

In the day-to-day operation of the University the Vice-Chancellor, the Board of Governors and the Academic Board work together in a mutually dependent relationship. The Vice-Chancellor is the chair of the Academic Board and is a member of the Board of Governors.

  • The Governors, advised by the Vice-Chancellor and the Academic Board, take decisions which determine the strategic direction the University takes. The Board of Governors also has overall legal responsibility for the University's activities as set out by the Instrument and Articles of Government. The Board of Governors is supported by four committees, which oversee some areas of business on its behalf – the Finance and Employment Committee, Audit Committee, Nominations Committee and Remuneration Committee.
  • The Academic Board is the University's main academic authority as a degree awarding body. It helps to guide the University's academic development, set standards and determine curriculum content. The Academic Board is supported by a number of committees which oversee particular areas of business on its behalf.
  • The Vice-Chancellor, the chief executive, is responsible for the executive management of the University and its day-to-day direction and provides the vision and leadership necessary to put the governors' decisions into effect. The Vice-Chancellor is supported and advised by the University Executive Group.
