Professor Adrian Hopgood
Pro Vice-Chancellor Dean of Sheffield Business School
Professor Adrian Hopgood joined the University in 2011, having previously been employed as Dean of the Faculty of Technology at De Montfort University, where he also had responsibility for its international strategy.
As Dean of Sheffield Business School, Professor Hopgood's work will focus on building on its national and international reputation and supporting the city region in its business growth strategy, which includes a focus on engineering and the creative industries.
Before joining De Montfort, Professor Hopgood previously worked for Nottingham Trent University and the Open University. His industrial experience includes work with Telstra Research Laboratories in Melbourne, Australia and Systems Designers PLC (now part of Hewlett-Packard).
Professor Hopgood has a BSc in Physics from the University of Bristol, a PhD from the University of Oxford, and an MBA and a Diploma in French from the Open University. His research interests are in intelligent computer systems and their practical applications. He has published 100 research papers and his textbook Intelligent Systems for Engineers and Scientists is ranked as a bestseller by its publisher Taylor and Francis. The third edition of the book was published in 2012.
He is a visiting professor at the Open University, fellow of the British Computer Society, chartered engineer, chartered scientist, chartered IT professional, and a reviewer and panelist for the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council.
Originally from Hampshire, Professor Hopgood is married and has a 16-year-old daughter. He is a member of the Campaign for Real Ale and his hobbies include walking and supporting Southampton Football Club.
