Professor John Leach
Pro Vice-Chancellor

Professor Leach joined Sheffield Hallam University in May 2012 as Pro Vice-Chancellor for the Faculty of Development and Society.
He was previously Pro Vice-Chancellor for Engagement at the University of Hull, a role that involved overseeing academic engagement with regional, national and international stakeholders. Prior to his two years at Hull, he was Dean of the Faculty of Education, Social Sciences and Law at the University of Leeds.
His academic background is in science education, with a focus on studies of teaching and learning in secondary schools. He has published several books and scholarly pieces in this field. He is an Academician of the Academy of Social Sciences, was a member of the Education sub-panel for the RAE2008, and is Deputy Chair of the Education sub-panel for the forthcoming Research Excellence Framework (REF).
As part of a regional university partnership group, Professor Leach helped to bring the National Science Learning Centre to the Yorkshire and Humber region, and the Regional Science Learning Centre to the Centre for Science Education at Sheffield Hallam.
Professor Leach was born in Manchester but grew up around Leeds. His wife Carolyn works at the University of Sheffield and they have two sons.
