Professor Martin joined Sheffield Hallam University as Pro Vice-Chancellor Academic on 1 September 2010.
He was previously Pro Vice-Chancellor (Academic) at De Montfort University, where he led on academic quality, teaching and learning, academic policy, strategy and development, the student experience, Higher Education Statistics Agency returns and league table performance.
Prior to De Montfort he was director of the National Subject Centre for English, located at Royal Holloway College, University of London. He then became dean of humanities at De Montfort in 2003, a position he held until he took on his PVC role at De Montfort in 2006.
Professor Martin graduated from Stirling University in 1974. He undertook a PhD at the University of Exeter where he taught full time for three years before taking up posts at Winchester (1980-1990) and then Gloucestershire. In 2000, he became the inaugural director of the English Subject Centre, based at Royal Holloway, subsequently moving on to become dean of humanities at De Montfort in 2003.
He is the author of a number of books and articles on the English Romantic period, and is a long-standing editor of the international journal, Literature and History. Professor Martin served on sub-panel 57 in RAE2008, and he continues to publish.
As an academic leader he is driven and strongly motivated by his professional interest in teaching and learning and the student experience, believing strongly that higher education in all its manifestations has the capacity to transform people's lives.
