Faculty of Development and Society
Sylvia Johnson is the
Pro Vice-Chancellor for the Faculty of Development and Society.
Following a career as a secondary mathematics teacher and researcher on a national assessment project in the 1980's, she joined the University's Mathematics Education Centre, later moving to a senior post in mathematics where she introduced a new mathematics degree and support across the University for all students studying some mathematics. She chaired national forums associated with mathematics education and contributed to the Royal Society's Mathematics Education Committee and its publications and was an early executive member of an international research group on adult numeracy.
In the late 1990's Sylvia transferred to the School of Education where she introduced new programmes and led the development of the current initial teacher education provision and the growth of the wider research and CPD portfolios. She has advised international organisations on teacher education and CPD. As a member of Sheffield First for Education and Employment and a member of the Objective One Priority 3 Driver partnership team, she developed strong regional links and established the regional teaching assistant group SYTEC. She has been a member of several governing bodies in the education sector and is currently the University representative on the new Council of Governors for the Children's Hospital Trust. She is also leading on the development of a new strategic University partnership with Derbyshire Children's Services.
Sylvia has maintained her involvement in research and consultancy and over the past five years has led a number of DfES and TDA funded research projects associated with the professional development of those employed in the emerging Children's Services sector. She is also an academic advisor to an Irish project investigating how universities and business can work together to meet future educational and training needs of employees.
