Sheffield Polytechnic formed
Sheffield Polytechnic, formed by merging the existing Colleges of Art and Technology, became one of the first three polytechnics in the country – a coup considering the other two (Hatfield and Sunderland) were both higher status Regional Colleges, while the Sheffield College of Technology was only an Area College and the Sheffield College of Art and Design (despite its national reputation) had only one full-time degree equivalent course.
